EMCC conference and paradox

I am looking forward to the annual EMCC coaching and mentoring conference which starts Wednesday 1st March in Edinburgh.  As well as running my own sessions with colleagues on ethics and on peer supervision I am excited to be introducing a session by Dr Jenny Denyer on “Coaching at the Performance Edge: Embracing Paradox.”  Some recent research from the British Psychological Society makes for interesting reading and is a good example of paradox: “We know what will make us happy, why do we watch TV instead?”  A paper in the Journal of Positive Psychology examines why we engage in activities that are pleasant in the moment when we know more active, challenging activities will provide longer-lasting fulfilment.  One recommendation is to prepare for such activities ahead of time – like getting our gym kit ready the night before.  Just off to the gym now!
